How does the most recent generation of Dutch painters relate to the tradition – now stretching back a hundred years – of abstract painting? Can they make this idiom – rendered powerful and unambiguous by its clear forms and long history – their own, so that viewers find something in them other than repetition? Marius Lut, Jan van der Ploeg, Esther Tielemans and Evi Vingerling demonstrate that they are indeed capable of responding to abstraction. Each, in his or her own way, offers a riposte to abstract art.
